Why 1908 Crimewave ?
With so many stories in the UK papers telling us how bad society in the U.K is these days I wondered what it would be like to read the news form 100 years ago? How much violence was reported in the papers back then and how was it reported? The first thing to note is that in the sources I’ve looked at already, many of the reports come directly from the courts and the proceedings and are fairly dry reportage.
This isn’t an exhaustive search, just the papers I have current access to, however I’m hoping that we can see the same sort of stories published 100 years ago that we see today. I’ve not scanned forward, so I’ve no idea what we will turn up, how much gun and knife crime is there ? What sort of punishments are handed down? What age and sex are the perpetrators? I’m trying to take a peek at the papers daily and report back what I find.
